Legend has it that the first FedEx chief, Frederick W. Smith, was inspired to create the famed FedEx 'hub and spokes' model based on what he learned about Nagpur. In the earlier part of the twentieth century, Nagpur was the Indian Postal Department's hub for distributing letters and packets to India's four metropolitan cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. The city lies almost equidistant from the four metros. A plane from say, Kolkata, with letters meant for the other three metros, would land there and empty out the bags for sorting. It would then pick letters from other three metros meant for Kolkata and return. Smith recreated the model in Memphis, Tennessee and founded an entire industry - logistics.
With India's integration with the global economy, policy planners have re-discovered Nagpur's strategic location. Nagpur is not only at the centre of India but is also the central location between South Africa and North East Asia, Russia and South East Asia, Europe and South East Asia, Europe and Australia. More than 300 international flights fly over Nagpur, each day. Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN), is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in India which has been planned to exploit the location advantage of Nagpur.
